Ayurveda and Panchakarma in Karnataka

Karnataka is Kerala’s neighbour in the south-west of India: the same tropical climate and a centuries-old school of Ayurveda, but without the mass tourist flow. The catalogue holds clinics of different kinds: a holistic one in Bangalore, a retreat with yoga in Gokarna, traditional centres in Udupi and Manipal. We help you work out which format suits your goal, and accompany the trip.

What sets Ayurveda in Karnataka apart

The holistic format (Bangalore)

Bangalore has holistic clinics where Ayurveda is integrated with modern diagnostics, yoga and naturopathy. A good fit when you want not only the traditional protocols but also medical confidence in the approach and resort-level service.

Yoga and Panchakarma (the coast)

On the coast there are retreats where Ayurveda is combined with daily yoga and breathing practice. A good fit when you want not only to cleanse the body but also to work with the breath, in a calm setting by the sea.

The Ayurvedic region of Udupi

Udupi and neighbouring Manipal form the traditional academic district of Ayurveda on the western coast of Karnataka. The clinics here follow the classical protocols with doctors of the South Indian school, and each has its own pharmacy. An intimate format, without the mass tourist flow.

Karnataka’s Ayurveda is close to Kerala’s in its protocols — the emphasis is on oil treatments (abhyanga, shirodhara, pizhichil, kizhi) and individual programmes based on your history. The basic course is 14 days; longer programmes of 21–28 days are for deep work.

Frequently asked questions

Karnataka is the neighbouring state, and the climate and Ayurvedic protocols largely coincide. The main differences: fewer international visitors, so the centres work in a more intimate way; and a more varied geography — from Bangalore (holistic clinics) to the Gokarna coast (retreats with yoga) and the academic district of Udupi. Kerala is the mainstream; Karnataka is quieter and more varied in format.

Three geographical hubs. Bangalore — the state capital, with holistic clinics integrating Ayurveda and modern medicine. Gokarna — the coast in the north of the state, with “yoga + Panchakarma” retreats. Udupi and Manipal — the western coast, the traditional academic district of Ayurveda. The exact location and transport advice are given for every clinic in the catalogue above.

It depends on the centre you choose. Bangalore (BLR) is a large international hub, convenient for the clinics in Bangalore. Mangalore (IXE) is closer to Udupi and Manipal. Gokarna is easiest to reach from Goa (Dabolim or Mopa airports): about 130 km, roughly 3 hours by car. Flights from Moscow usually involve a change in Delhi, Mumbai or the Gulf states.

The best season runs from October to March: warm, dry and comfortable for the procedures. The monsoon (June–September) is considered the best time for deep Panchakarma in the classical Ayurvedic tradition: open pores take the oils better and the humidity supports the course. April and May are hot, and prices are lower.

The doctors and senior medical staff speak English. The holistic clinics in Bangalore and the larger centres often have Russian-speaking assistants or can arrange an interpreter. Kannada (the state language) and Hindi are used among the staff and with junior personnel.

It depends on the location. Bangalore: Lalbagh park and the surroundings of Mysore with its palace and gardens. Gokarna: beaches, ancient Shiva temples and Gokarna hill. Udupi: the famous Krishna temple, the seashore and St Mary’s Island. In the foothills of the state there are the coffee and cardamom plantations of Coorg and Sakleshpur.
