Ayurveda for the joints and spine
Ayurveda for the joints and spine is not a set of massages but a holistic traditional system. It works not with the symptom but with the cause: according to Ayurvedic ideas, at the basis of pain is an imbalance of the doshas (more often vata), which is connected with a worsening of the nourishment of the tissues, tightness and the accumulation of the undigested (ama). To suit your condition the doctor selects a programme individually — after an in-person diagnosis.

When to consider a programme
If the pain returns again and again, worsens towards evening, in the morning gives way to stiffness, radiates with numbness and limits movement — this is not chance but a signal of deep processes. Painkillers alone will not remove them: a correction of the cause itself is needed.
The doshas: why Ayurveda for osteochondrosis begins with diagnosis
In Ayurveda health is the balance of three regulatory principles (doshas):
- Cotton wool — movement, the nervous system, the mobility of the joints; is responsible, among other things, for the state of the bone tissue.
- Pitta — the metabolism and inflammatory processes.
- Kapha — the lubrication and stability of the joints, the density of the tissues.
With pains in the back and knees, most often disturbed is Cotton wool. Its imbalance gives dryness in the joints, «crunching», shooting pains, numbness, instability of the joints. Therefore treatment begins with an individual diagnosis by a doctor, not with a ready-made protocol.
Causes of osteochondrosis from the point of view of Ayurveda
Modern medicine describes osteochondrosis as degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs. Ayurveda looks at the cause more deeply:
- accumulation Oh my — of the products of incomplete digestion, which clog the tissues and disrupt their nourishment;
- a weakening of the nourishment of the articular cartilage;
- chronic muscle spasm;
- a prolonged imbalance of Cotton wool, which governs the state of the bones and joints.
Therefore the programme combines cleansing (removal of ama) and local therapy of the spine or joint.
With which diseases of the joints and spine people turn to Ayurveda
People most often turn to Ayurveda programmes with:
Inflammatory diseases of the joints (arthritis)
- rheumatoid arthritis;
- reactive arthritis;
- psoriatic arthritis;
- gout (gouty arthritis);
- Polyarthritis.
Degenerative changes
- osteoarthrosis (arthrosis), including the knee and hip joints;
- osteochondrosis (cervical, thoracic, lumbar);
- spondylosis and spondyloarthrosis;
- intervertebral hernias and protrusions;
- osteoporosis.
The spine and nerves
- radiculitis, sciatica (pinching of the sciatic nerve);
- lumbago («shooting pain»);
- ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew’s disease).
Periarticular and muscular disorders
- bursitis, tendinitis;
- chronic muscular stiffness and pain.
Within the programme the therapy is aimed at reducing inflammation, restoring the nourishment of the tissues and improving mobility. Among the Ayurvedic compositions for the joints, Yogaraja Guggulu, for example, is traditionally applied — the preparation is selected by the doctor to suit your condition.
How the treatment programme is built
So that the result is lasting, the intervention is made comprehensive. In clinics of India — the homeland of Ayurveda — the programme usually includes:
- an individual diagnosis by a doctor;
- cleansing procedures (Panchakarma);
- local oil procedures on the problem zone;
- herbal warmings and compresses;
- the taking of Ayurvedic preparations;
- a diet and lifestyle recommendations.
The key stage is Panchakarma, literally «five actions»: vamana, virechana, basti, nasya and raktamokshana. Its task is to remove the accumulated ama, reduce inflammation and prepare the tissues for restoration.
In local therapy the following are applied: Kati-Basti and Lion's Mane Mushroom — the holding of warm medicinal oil in a «reservoir» on the lower back or neck, Pineapple sage (herbal compress pouches) and warmings (information). They are especially appropriate with osteochondrosis of the cervical and lumbar regions. Separately used is Ghee — clarified butter: in Ayurveda it serves as a conductor of medicinal herbs deep into the tissues.

Whom treatment of the joints with Ayurveda suits
The experience of clinics shows that the programme is especially appropriate when:
- sedentary work and chronic tension of the back;
- the pain lasts longer than 6 months;
- frequent exacerbations;
- there are contraindications to surgery;
- painkillers give only temporary relief.
If you recognise your condition — Ayurveda can become a well-founded alternative.
Why treatment is better undergone in India
In India Ayurveda is an official medical system with state standards and accreditation of clinics. Panchakarma is carried out under the supervision of doctors; in many clinics the practice is passed down in the family from generation to generation. A full course is 21–28 days and more, with inpatient stay: the climate, regimen, nutrition and daily procedures under a doctor’s control give what it is impossible to get from short outpatient sessions.
What is most often noted after the programme
Patients most often note:
- less pain and stiffness;
- more mobility;
- calmer sleep;
- less muscle tension;
- more energy.
Results are individual and depend on the condition — this is not a guarantee and not a replacement for treatment.
Ayurveda gives not an instant effect but a consistent restoration. If chronic pain has become part of life, perhaps it is time to change strategy.
Frequently asked questions
A full course is 21–28 days and more: during this time the full cycle of Panchakarma is completed and the result is consolidated. Short programmes of 7–14 days are rather an acquaintance and support. The exact duration is determined by the doctor after a diagnosis.
Accommodation, meals according to the programme, diagnosis, daily procedures and preparations — the composition depends on the clinic and the programme.
It depends on the clinic, the duration and the level of accommodation — we calculate it individually on request.
We help with the visa and accompany you in Russian at all stages.
The programme is led by a doctor taking into account contraindications; we agree your condition and diagnoses before the trip.
We will select a programme and a clinic to suit your situation
Tell us about your condition — we will select a clinic strong precisely in working with the joints and spine, and a programme to suit your duration and budget. A competently carried-out course of Ayurveda helps to return ease of movement without aggressive methods and surgery.
Ayurveda for diseases of the joints and spine is support and a supplement, not a replacement for treatment. With arthritis, a hernia, pronounced pain and other diagnoses, a doctor’s supervision is obligatory.
