Samudra Beach
In the south of India, along the ocean shore, stretches the state of Kerala, famous for its temples and palaces, Ayurvedic clinics, developed infrastructure and magnificent sandy beaches. On the coast of the Arabian Sea are hotels oriented mainly at Western guests. Not far from the state capital, in the resort town of Kovalam, there is a whole string of cosy beaches, and one of them bears the name «Samudra», which translated from Sanskrit means «ocean».

Entertainment and excursions
Samudra is a remote stretch of shore where there are usually few visitors: there are almost no hotels, shops or infrastructure here. But within a radius of a kilometre there are souvenir stalls and small restaurants with dishes of Indian and European cuisine. Locals come here especially for the fresh seafood.
Nearby are several other beaches with well-developed infrastructure. Not far away are a temple and a mosque, and on the neighbouring stretch of shore rises the famous lighthouse, from whose observation platform magnificent views open up. By bus or car you can reach the state capital in a few minutes.
Special attention in Trivandrum deserves the East Fort: on its territory is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, considered the richest in the world. Only believers are admitted inside, but the building is so beautiful that even a view from outside will leave a sea of impressions. Nearby is a pond where every morning the faithful perform a ritual ablution.
Nearby also stands the Kuthiramalika Palace («the palace of horses»): its eaves are adorned with 122 carved wooden figures of horses. Besides the temples, the city has the City Garden with a fine collection of exotic plants, the Museum of Applied Arts, a zoo, picturesque lanes and old buildings.
Samudra Beach — a place for seclusion
Samudra Beach will suit those who value peace and seclusion. There are no noisy groups or loud music here, there is always a free spot, and you will not have to «jostle» with other holidaymakers. Among the downsides — the only evening entertainment here is the sunset, but what a sunset!
In the mornings you can see the local fishermen hauling long nets full of catch out of the sea. In the evenings the owners of the neighbouring cafés and eateries bring their tables right out onto the beach, and to the rustle of the waves, against the backdrop of a completely unreal sunset, you can leisurely dine on freshly caught fish.
Despite the absence of coral reefs, divers like to make dives here. In the clear water you can see motley shoals of tropical fish, and with luck even a ray. However, to admire this beauty there is no need at all to dive to the depths: by the rocks framing Samudra Beach, the little fish, sea urchins and unusual shells can be seen right from the shore.
