Ayurveda for the stomach and digestion
Ayurveda for digestion is care for the «digestive fire» (agni) through nutrition, regimen and herbs: according to Ayurvedic ideas, it is precisely on the strength of agni that both well-being and the health of the stomach depend. A weak or disturbed fire of digestion is traditionally associated with heaviness, bloating, heartburn and the accumulation of the undigested (ama). The fire of digestion (agni) — what it is
The central concept of Ayurveda about digestion is Agni, the «fire of digestion». It is held that it is precisely on the strength of agni that it depends whether food is fully assimilated or turns into ama (undigested «toxins»). Digestion is connected mainly with Pitta dosha (fire), and the mucous membrane and the stability of the stomach — with CapCut. Hence the whole approach: not to «suppress» the symptom, but to restore an even fire of digestion — with moderate, warm, regular nutrition and a regimen.
An important framework: gastritis, ulcer, erosions and other diseases of the stomach are diagnoses that are made and managed by a doctor. Below is traditional support of digestion and prevention, not a replacement for examination and treatment.
What Ayurveda traditionally works with
According to Ayurvedic ideas, support related to the stomach and digestion is applied with:
- heaviness, bloating, sluggish digestion, a tendency to overeat;
- heartburn and «heat» in the stomach (traditionally — excess pitta);
- an irregular appetite and discomfort from unsuitable food;
- prevention and recovery of digestion after lapses in nutrition.
With gastritis (especially during an exacerbation), ulcer disease and persistent symptoms the Ayurvedic approach is possible only as support agreed with a doctor. And separately: during an exacerbation of gastritis and ulcer sharp spices are contraindicated — although in the usual regimen Ayurveda even recommends them for agni, during inflammation they are harmful.
Ayurvedic clinics for the treatment of the gastrointestinal tract in India
A full programme — with diagnosis, individual nutrition, herbs and, where indicated, Panchakarma — is undergone at an Ayurvedic clinic under a doctor’s supervision. Choose a clinic to suit your condition and budget:
Nutrition for the stomach: how to support agni
Nutrition is the basis. To support an even «fire of digestion»:
- Eat warm, fresh, simple food and at roughly the same time; the main meal — in the daytime.
- According to hunger, without overeating — fill the stomach roughly two thirds.
- Mild spices (ginger, cumin, fennel, coriander) traditionally «kindle» agni — but NOT during an exacerbation of gastritis/ulcer.
- Limit — heavy, fatty, fried food, an excess of the sour and spicy, cold food and food at night, incompatible combinations.
In detail — on the page Ayurvedic nutrition; the diet is selected to suit the constitution (dosha). With heartburn and «heat» the emphasis is on the cooling and non-spicy; with sluggish digestion — on the warm and gently warming.
Herbs and preparations
Ayurveda traditionally applies bitter and gently warming herbs and compositions for digestion — for example, Triphala and spices for agni. The selection — with a doctor to suit the condition and constitution; with gastritis and ulcer the self-prescription of herbs and spices can be harmful. What Ayurvedic medicines and what to look at for safety — on a separate page.
Cleansing and Panchakarma
With persistent digestive problems the doctor may prescribe a course programme — Panchakarma: into it, where indicated, enter Bast (cleansing of the intestines, balance of vata) and Faced (cleansing through the gastrointestinal tract, pitta). It is carried out only at a clinic, with preparation and recovery. The general context — cleansing the body with Ayurveda.
cleansing according to Ayurveda
Start with the regimen: warm fresh food at roughly the same time, according to hunger and without overeating, the main meal in the daytime, mild spices for agni. This supports the «fire of digestion» even before any herbs.
Within the tradition — sparing nutrition, cooling products with «heat», refusal of the spicy, sour, alcohol and food at night. But gastritis (especially during an exacerbation) is managed by a doctor, and sharp spices at this time are contraindicated.
Heartburn is traditionally associated with excess pitta: cool, non-spicy and non-sour food, a measured regimen, refusal of overeating and a late dinner help. Persistent heartburn is a reason to see a doctor.
It is a key concept of Ayurveda — the ability of the organism to digest and assimilate food. An even agni in this model is considered the basis of health, a weak one — the cause of the accumulation of ama and discomfort.
No. An ulcer is a diagnosis that is treated by a doctor. The Ayurvedic approach (nutrition, regimen) can be only support agreed with a doctor, not a replacement for treatment.
